I've spent a lot of time on this one, and I'm fairly satisfied with it. Ultimately though, it's a failed project, since the door doesn't close 100% when the games are in it. I should've made it deeper.

This entire thing was crafted by me, from the cardboard measured, cut out, and glued together, to the tiny triforce on the front. (The hinges were purchased at Hobby Lobby.) I even put a metal rod in the side of it, and magnets in the "door" so that it holds itself shut.

I'm sure there will be some people that contest this being acceptable "box art." To those people I say that this is a box for the games, and it is just as much art as putting together images with layers and filters. There is no rule that states that we can't upload photographs of a product instead of a digital mock-up or skin.

I hope you all enjoy it, I've had a hell of a time making it.

Wow. I'd buy one if you were selling. But I have 5 Zelda GameCube packages so it'd have to be bigger than holding just 3. :)

Very nice, I wish I could craft something like that. All I can build is a box, a chair, and a table. Great job. 5/5 +fav

I've got one question, what materials did you use to make that package? I'm prolly taking a guess it's leather and brass.

Very awesome and well designed.

Now I'm thinking about making one of these for a Firefly boxset. Put my Firefly DVDs in there, Serenity, and the Serenity CE and leave a spot open for the hopeful blu ray release of the movie.

Then again, that would be pretty big so scratch that.

#4, I actually made it from cardboard wrapped in vinyl (faux leather) fabric. The triforce on the side is made from a gold reflective posterboard, and the triforce on the front is made out of cardboard that I cut and wrapped in the gold coating from that same posterboard.

Everybody else, thanks for the compliments and favorites, I'm glad you appreciate it.

the opening looks wonky and that leather looks somewhat "wavy". kudos on making it, but it does look a bit strange to me.

TheSlyder 41 [ 1 decade ago ]

Yeah, I'm thinking I put the hinges on a little bit crooked or something since it doesn't line up 100% perfectly. Also, I can blame the "waves" on the glue. After drying, it makes everything wrinkle (By everything, I mean the fabric.) but then after an extra 24 hours, it flattens itself out. I hadn't given it time to unwrinkle when I took the photograph, I guess.

First of all, allow me to apologize for "bumping" my box, as it's not my intention. I just feel compelled to elaborate on what I've done. I've been bothered by how plain the presentation for the box was, and I finally set aside the time to spruce it up a little bit. I'm far more satisfied with it this way.

For anyone who's interested, I downloaded the Zelda font from DaFont.com, it's called "Triforce." I'm sure plenty of people would appreciate its use.

In my opinion, this does not count as a video game box art.
If you want people to see your work, post this on an arts and crafts website or something.
But of course, everyone else seems to disagree with me so it doesn't matter what i say.
Well done.

avatar
TheSlyder 41 [ 1 decade ago ]

I'm sure if I'd used a leather texture on a template and slapped some logos on it, you'd have a different opinion. This is the same as any other box set on the site except this is physical rather than conceptual.

[ Reply ]

avatar
Cerium 43 [ 1 decade ago ]

#23 No this aint the same as any other box on the site!
This is not a box art, its a box to store your games in.

[ Reply ]

avatar
VGMaster 42 [ 1 decade ago ]

Cerium, this is just as much of a boxart as a collecter's edition tin. He made something like a tin, which doesn't always have lots of logos on it.

[ Reply ]

avatar
xIAMHUNTERx 43 [ 1 decade ago ]

Cerium, if this isn't a boxart, then neither are these:

link
link

I'd quit while you're just behind a little bit.

[ Reply ]

avatar
Cerium 43 [ 1 decade ago ]

Except that a collecters edition tins usually are sold with the game inside it which acts like a box art cover. This is not a box art cover, this is a storage box for games. This is no different from someone making a shelf out of wood and then submitting it.

#26 And I dont get how the two links you showed me do not qualify as box art. Please explain yourself at least when trying to argue.

TheSlyder 41 [ 1 decade ago ]

I appreciate the defense, gentlemen, but I think I have a better example:

link

What's the difference? I'm not pretending that this is a package sold in stores. That's pretty much it, and I'm afraid there is no rule that states that our boxes have to be commercially acceptable. In fact, my Portal box shouldn't be proper by your argument, since it's "Only a storage box for the game." I designed it to be an attractive case for the game, not "packaging" for it, just like I did this.

Now, before you say anything, pretend for a moment that instead of holding three DVD cases, it held one large case that held multiple disks inside of it, and I called it a "collector's set."

#29 Thats a little hypocritcal, isn't it?

Anyway, I faved this box awhile ago and never commented, So I think I will now.

This takes real effort. I love it. I'd like one, too. Preferably for a different series xD I'm not a major Zelda fan. Still, I love it! I want to see another version with even moar effort! That would kick so much ass! :]

Oh, wow! My first Hall of Fame entry. What a wonderful feeling.

This isn't the last "real world" project that I plan on submitting. So expect others in the near future. This was my first project because it seemed like the most simple. (Turned out to be pretty complex.)

Thanks so much, everyone!

#27, Considering that one of them isn't even a box art and one of them is something you made by hand (like this)...

Gratz, Slyder!

[ Reply ]

avatar
Cerium 43 [ 1 decade ago ]

#32 One of them is a satire so that hardly counts does it? Use your brain!!

And the one i made by hand is an actual box art for a game. Are you saying that box arts made physically rather than conceptually shouldn't be allowed?

Hmmmm....

[ Reply ]

avatar
VGMaster 42 [ 1 decade ago ]

It's just different! Different isn't always bad.

congratz

[ Reply ]

avatar
Cerium 43 [ 1 decade ago ]

#34 Yes its different!
I mean dont get me wrong, I'm not saying this aint good by any means! It looks really amazing and im sure he could make a living out of making these and then selling them on eBay or somewhere. I'd certainly buy one.
What im saying is this does not count as a proper box art and xIAMHUNTERx's defence was pretty crap.

Anyway yeah, im tired of argueing. Lets just draw a line under this whole thing =]

I think that's a good idea, and I would like to state on one final note (And hopefully one that satisfies everyone) that I agree with you, it's not a video game case by any means, but it is a video game box, and there isn't a rule saying that what we produce has to strictly be video game cover inserts or cases specifically for a one game. Your point is valid, but I don't think it's an issue to bring up, since Reed or any mods have mentioned it.

#35, It wasn't "pretty crap", it served to show how ridiculous you're making yourself look by complaining about how this isn't a "boxart". I'm pretty sure it is, since it's a.) a box, and b.) art.

[ Reply ]

avatar
Cerium 43 [ 1 decade ago ]

#40 Er yes it was crap defense!! You tried proving your point by showing me a satire box which is a joke, and a box art made with real paper to fit the "Paper Mario" theme.
Ha! Now who looks ridiculous!
Now i suggest we forget about this now and get on with our lives.

I'm actually planning one that will blow this one out of the water. It's just a matter of whether or not the effort to make it is worth the result. Considering how much I learned on this one, it might just be. I know what mistakes to not make, now.

#68, It was accidental. I had supplies for a completely unrelated project and I tripped, this was the result.

Really, though, this was very simple and easy. It required very little know-how and craftsmanship. I actually messed up on a lot of things with it. I've no doubt everyone here that liked it could make one on their own if they just invested the time (The hardest and most time consuming part was planning it out, how I would shape the box itself, what materials to use, and how to get the effect I wanted.)

Everything I used I got from Hobby Lobby (Except the cardboard for the box, which I got from work, but could be purchased from Hobby Lobby as well.

I took photographs of the process. Maybe when I get a chance I'll make a tutorial thread for it.
